How AtmoAtlas works
Three things we do differently
Several models, one forecast
ECMWF-AIFS as the backbone, sharpened by ICON-EU (7 km) and HRRR (3 km) where they are available.
Corrected by observations
Cloud cover is adjusted against airport METAR reports, so a sunny afternoon is not forecast as grey.
The same data as an API
Forecasts, rain radar, marine, air quality and maps through a simple REST API. atmoatlas.com/api
Our technology
One engine, several models, checked against the measurements
AtmoAtlas computes its own forecast: it combines global and regional models, corrects them with ground observations, then compares every forecast with what the stations actually measured. The accuracy figures on our methodology page come from that daily check.
- ECMWF-AIFS for the general picture, up to 14 days.
- ICON (Europe) and HRRR 3 km (United States) for the next hours.
- Cloud cover adjusted on airport METAR reports.
- Storm risk from convective energy (CAPE).
Data sources
Open data from public weather services
Forecast models are refreshed several times a day and the rain radar every 10 minutes (EUMETNET OPERA, DWD, NOAA). Air quality and pollen come from Copernicus CAMS, past weather and climate normals from the ERA5 reanalysis, sea temperature from the MUR satellite analysis (NASA/GHRSST).

Frequently asked questions
Are AtmoAtlas forecasts reliable?
We blend several reference models and correct cloud cover against real METAR observations, then publish how far our forecasts were from the measurements. Up to 7 days the forecast is detailed; beyond 10 days it is shown as a trend.
Which models does AtmoAtlas use?
ECMWF-AIFS for the global forecast, DWD ICON over Europe, NOAA HRRR (3 km) over the United States and NOAA GFS to fill the gaps and extend to 14 days.
How often is the forecast updated?
Several times a day, as each new model run arrives. The rain radar is rebuilt every 10 minutes from official radars.
Is AtmoAtlas free?
Yes, checking the weather on the site is completely free. A paid API is available for developers and businesses. See the full weather API documentation →
Can I use this data in my own app?
Yes, through the AtmoAtlas API: forecasts, rain radar, marine, air quality and more. A free key gives 500 requests a day. See the full weather API documentation →
Where does the data come from?
From public weather services and research programmes: ECMWF, NOAA, DWD, EUMETNET and Copernicus. We compute, calibrate and verify; we do not copy other weather sites.
